The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand received the 'Sustainovation Award 2012' for its 'Think Blue. Factory.' environmental program from the WirtschaftsWoche business magazine and the Altran Foundation for Innovation. The jury said that the reason for its decision
was the exemplary combination of environmental and economic targets within the resource conservation program.
"Our commitment to the reduction of environmental impact and production cost also convinces independent experts," said Hubert Waltl, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand with responsibility for Production and Logistics, commenting on the award. Clean cars from clean factories not only relieve the burden on the environment but are also increasingly expected by our customers. Our program therefore strengthens our competitiveness and makes sense not only in environmental terms but also economically."
'Think Blue. Factory.' is the program adopted by the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand to make production more environmentally compatible. Energy and water consumption and waste production as well as solvent and carbon dioxide emissions are to be reduced by 25 per cent by 2018. Knowledge interchange between plants on technical solutions and recommended action is a characteristic feature of the program. 'Think Blue. Factory.' is part of 'Think Blue.', the holistic approach of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand to environmental sustainability.
The 'Sustainovation Award' is presented annually by a jury of independent professors and journalists. On behalf of the Altran Foundation, the experts assess ideas and technologies from throughout Germany combining business success with sustainable improvements to environmental efficiency. All this year's winners are announced in 'WirtschaftsWoche' magazine.
