Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador Barry McGuigan has provided rising star Patrick McCann with his first one-to-one mentoring session.
Patrick McCann was one of five Jaguar Academy of Sport Rising Stars to receive a Special Recognition
Award at the end of 2011. As part of this prize Patrick will be provided with a year’s worth of one-to-one mentoring from boxing legend and Academy Ambassador Barry McGuigan.
During their session at Fitzroy Lodge in South London Barry and Patrick spoke about how it feels to compete at the top level and Barry was able to share his knowledge from over 20 years in the business.
However, boxing isn’t all about talking and the pair couldn’t wait to get into the ring. Barry was able to pass on some physical tips and industry secrets to Patrick as they took some time in the ring and on the punchbags to look at technique and style.
Jaguar Academy of Sport Ambassador and Mentor Barry McGuigan commented, “Patrick is a fantastic young boxer who is showing a lot of promise, I fully expect to see him compete at the highest level and I hope some of the things we have discussed today will help him on this journey. I look forward to seeing Patrick again soon and monitoring his progress.”
Jaguar Academy of Sport rising star Patrick McCann commented, “When I heard Barry was going to be my one-to-one mentor I was thrilled as he is such a respected boxer. It’s been great working with him and I’m really looking forward to more sessions, his advice has been fantastic and it was great to have this opportunity ahead of the start of the Junior ABA Championships, you can’t buy the knowledge I’ve received today!”
The Jaguar Academy of Sport aims to recognise, celebrate and inspire the very best of British sporting talent and success. This is fulfilled through a Bursary Fund and a unique Mentoring and Education Programme delivered through a series of workshops and talent days. Mentoring is key to the Academy and provides all the Rising Stars with the non-financial support they need in order to be successful and one-to-one mentoring opportunities like this, mean our Rising Stars are able to work with Britain’s sporting greats and ultimately their heroes who they aspire to be.
